Is this Pope John Paul II waving from beyond the grave? Vatican TV director says Yes
This fiery figure is being hailed by the faithful as the latest miracle of Pope John Paul II. The image, which appears to show a right hand raised in a blessing, was seen during a commemoration ceremony to mark his death. The image first appeared on the Vatican News Service, a TV station which specialises in religious broadcasts. The memorial service close to a religious shrine, was celebrated on April 2, the second anniversary of Pope John Paul’s death. Polish cameraman Oregon Lukasik took the photographs of the ceremony on a new camera. But he viewed them on his computer and saw the image, he immediately contacted Father Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of the late Pope. Lukasik said: “I took several pictures and at the time didn't think anything of them. It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something. The flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II.” Vatican News Service director Fr Jarek Cielecki described the event after attending a service close to the Holy Father’s birthplace at Kadowice. The pictures were broadcast continuously on Italian TV and also posted on religious and newspaper websites with a link to the Polish religious website www.koraaym.org. By midday the site had crashed as thousands of people logged on the link to see the fiery figure for themselves. Father Cielecki said: “You can see the image of a person in the flames. And I think it Is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II.” The Bible says:
Revelation, Chapters 17 and 19. I hate to disappoint those ecstatic Poles who believe they have captured an image of Pope John Paul II in a bonfire during the celebrations to mark the second anniversary of his death. There is no miracle. As anyone who has ever walked down Belfast’s Shankhill Road on the eve of the Twelfth of July can testify, the sight of a Pope in flames is a rather common one. Last time I was there, I saw about 50!!
Roman Catholic Priest Father Cielecki said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff. "You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II,” he said. The pictures were being broadcast continuously on Italian TV and also posted on religious websites, some of which crashed as thousands logged on to see for themselves the eerie figure formed by the flames. The bonfire was lit during a service at Beskid Zywiecki, close to John Paul’s birthplace at Katowice, southern Poland, on April 2, the second anniversary of his death. Hundreds had attended the ceremony. Gregorz Lukasik, the Polish man who took the photographs, said: “It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something. I showed them to my brother and sister and they, like me, were convinced the flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II. I was so happy with the picture that I showed it to our local bishop who said that Pope John Paul had made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death."
ULSTER UNIONIST CONGRATULATES NEW R.C. CARDINAL THE Ulster Unionist Party deputy leader Danny Kennedy has congratulated Archbishop Sean Brady on the announcement that he is to be made a Cardinal. The Newry and Armagh MLA said: “I offer my congratulations to Archbishop Brady on his appointment as Cardinal.” He said the Catholic leader had played a vital role in helping establish the current situation in Northern Ireland. "The Archbishop has made important contributions to peace and stability in Northern Ireland, and has also reminded those in political leadership of our obligations to the weakest in our society. He joins an impressive list of faith leaders from Northern Ireland whose role and contribution has been recognised beyond our shores.” VATICAN SUSPENDS MONSIGNOR "WHO SPOKE OF GAY SEX LIFE"
But the Rome daily newspaper La Repubblica reported that Vatican officials recognised the Vatican office in which one priest was being interviewed and that it was the monsignor’s office. The priest said during the interview that he “didn’t feel he was sinning” by having sex with gay men, La Repubblica said. REVEREND McCREA M.P. SAYS THEY ARE BEATEN YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING! "SHINNER" FALLS FROM ROOF OF ORANGE HALL SINN Fein was at a loss to explain how a party member ended up in hospital after falling from the roof of a Newcastle Orange hall in the middle of the night. The PSNI confirmed that they had responded to reports of “suspicious activity” at the hall on Shimna Road shortly before 2.45am on Saturday. “It is believed that a male had fallen from the building,” said a police spokeswoman.“ A 17 year old youth was taken to hospital by ambulance”. The Orange Order said a Union Flag was torn down from the roof and it is understood police will interview the injured party at a later stage. Sinn Fein confirmed the injured person was a member of its youth wing. “He is a member of Ogra Sinn Fein, but to my knowledge he has not been charged with anything,” said a spokesman. “It is alleged that youths did take down a flag but I am not sure whether it is true or not. It is not the type of thing we would be condoning, we oppose attacks on Orange halls. He broke his wrist and hurt his back. We don't know if he was directly involved in taking the flag or not.” South Down DUP MLA Jim Wells asked: “What is a Sinn Fein member doing on top of an Orange hall at 2.45am in the morning? This will raise suspicions the party’s condemnation of attacks on such halls are hollow. I believe attacks on halls are carried out by people who are strong Sinn Fein supporters.” Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland Secretary Drew Nelson said the persistent pattern of attacks pointed to an orchestrated campaign. "If Sinn Fein are really serious in their condemnation then why aren't they calling on their community to bring information to the police?” he asked. PAISLEY HECKLED DURING RALLY AT THE DIAMOND The Rev Dr Ian Paisley was bundled into a car and whisked away at the end of Sunday night’s pre-Twelfth open air rally at The Diamond, Loughgall. Whereas in the past the Moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church was embraced and feted by admirers, we saw police minders unceremoniously shunting him into a car which ferried him away from a baying crowd. There were cries of “Traitor!” and “Lundy!” as Northern Ireland’s First Minister exited, having ignored questions shouted at him by hecklers. At the outset of the rally, the Rev Kenneth Elliot, minister of Portadown's Bethany Free Presbyterian Church, asked those present to be respectful and desist from protests "during the preaching of the Word and the reading of the lessons". "We hardly needed to be told that,” one angry protestor said afterwards. “Most of us have been members of the Free Presbyterian Church for a very long time, so we know how to behave at a service.” Protestors also noted that Sunday night’s message was "exclusively gospel centred, unlike past years when it was almost exclusively political”. ”The ‘Big Man' has been coming here every July since 1966 and this is the first time I’ve ever beard him speak in this manner,” said a spokesman for the protesters, who dismissed suggestions that his group had been in the minority. "Monday’s News Letter suggested 15 protesters a figure they’ve since told us was provided by the police incidentally but that is pure nonsense,” the spokesman said.”There were upwards of 100 protesters and even a good number of those who didn’t join with us told us afterwards that they agreed with every point we’d made and with the relevance of every question we'd asked.” He continued, “As people who, in the past, followed Dr Paisley’s leadership without reservation, it gave us no pleasure to have had to try and question him in this manner. But sometimes there are things that have to be done, however unpleasant. Before Sunday night’s rally we stressed that we wanted nothing more than the opportunity to ask some questions on matters which concern us. The reason that had to be done in so public a Unfortunately, just as he has refused to respond to phone calls and emails, he refused to answer when we tried to make our points in the flesh on Sunday night. He just ignored all of what was going on, which was bizarre. In fact, at one stage, when a protestor tried to ask why Dr Paisley had gone into Government with murderers and why, after everything he’d said in the past, he was now sharing power with those with blood on their hands, another Free Presbyterian minister defended him by telling us ‘Martin McGuinness was never convicted of murder’. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Not only do we now have the DUP in government with Sinn Fein, we actually have a Free Presbyterian minister leaping to the defence of Martin McGuinness. All of this is a complete about turn. Is it any wonder people are bewildered?” The spokesman continued, “Watching Dr Paisley being bundled into his car by his PSNI minders was reminiscent of watching David Trimble making his exit, hounded by DUP supporters. In fact, you can go back a lot further than that, for some of us were there when the same thing happened to Brian Faulkner and, before him, Terence O’Neill. But I never thought I’d live to see the day when Free Presbyterians and DUP voters were shouting ‘Traitor!’ at Ian Paisley as he was spirited away.” Asked if he felt Dr Paisley would be at The Diamond on Sunday, July 6, 2008, the protesters’ spokesman replied,"I doubt it. Given what happened on Sunday night, I’d be very surprised if the organisers were to invite him. And, even if they did, I don’t think he’d want to face another reception like that" First Minister Ian Paisley side-stepped questions about a possible Papal visit to Northern Ireland. The DUP leader was on an official visit to Trinity College, Dublin, where he was questioned about comments from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin about a possible visit by Pope Benedict. But he told reporters he would not be commenting on the remarks. “I am here as First Minister and I’m a politician and I’m not answering any questions on that,” he said. Mr Paisley said he would not be commenting on religious matters while acting as a politician. He was invited to address the Edward Carson lecture at Trinity, organised by its historical society to honour the university’s former student and unionism's founding father. Was Dr Paisley not a politician - an M.E.P.- when he quite correctly faced down Pope John Paul with shouts of AntiChrist? So what has changed is the question true Protestants are asking? Back to the TopDOCUMENT TO PUT CAT AMONG DUP PIGEONS First Minister, Ian Paisley, is coming under increasing pressure from local DUP dissidents unhappy with the direction of his recent leadership. Further proof of their dissatisfaction emerged with the publication of an leaflet entitled ‘Take a Stand’. The publication of the four page full colour document follows the DUP leader and Free Presbyterian Church Moderator’s hostile reception when he turned up for the annual pre-Twelfth at The Diamond on Sunday, July 8 On that occasion, protesters heckled him and bombarded him with questions on what they view as being his abandonment of the values he once propounded. There were cries of “traitor!” and “Lundy!” as PSNI minders bundled him through the crowd and into a waiting car in which he was whisked away. Speaking about the new leaflet a spokesman for those behind it said, “Some 35,000 copies have been published. Initially, it will be forwarded to DUP councillors, MLAs and MPs. After that, it will be distributed throughout the province. There is no shortage of DUP voters willing to assist us get it out to the widest possible audience.” Dr Paisley has lost the confidence of many of those who have been long-time supporters of his, both as a church leader and as a politician. For the first time, doubts have arisen and questions are being asked. Unfortunately, to date, he has refused to answer those. The leaflet quotes past utterances by Ian Paisley and measures those against his current stance, citing Biblical references in support of what is an undisguised attack on the First Minister. Among other things, ‘Take a Stand’ denounces him on the grounds of ‘treason’, ‘ecumenism’ and having ‘entered into political negotiations with the Roman Catholic Church’. His detractors condemn him, too, for having called for reconciliation, as well as for in its words having “plunged the dagger of treachery into the very heart of Ulster”, branding him “the assassin”. He also stands accused of having entered into a pact ‘with Ulster's enemies’, and is slammed for a recent statement in which, in the course of a visit to the site of the Battle of the Boyne in the company of Taoiseach, Bertie Aherne, he said “we no longer need a hedge with our neighbours”. The pamphlet’s authors taunt him, reminding him of an earlier tirade against Captain Terence O’Neill, who travelled to Dublin to meet Sean Lemass. At the time, Ian Paisley’s comment was, “King William crossed the Boyne to save us - O’Neill crossed it to sell us.” Readers also are reminded that he once described the real aim of the IRA as being “the annihilation of Protestantism,” and of his statement, “What Rome failed to achieve in 1641, 1689, 1690, 1798, 1916 and 1968, the IRA are pushing for now - complete victory” The pamphlet writers’ follow up question to that is why, then, has he gone into a power sharing executive with Sinn Fein, with Martin McGuinness sitting alongside as Deputy First Minister? The authors’ conclusion is, “Ian Paisley’s words stand as a condemnation to him; he is guilty of all he has accused others of being guilty of. We make no bones about the fact that we are trying to spark a debate within the DUP as to what is going on in our country” the critics’ spokesman said. "And we would remind Ian Paisley of a question he must ask himself and then answer, even if he isn’t willing to answer us - ‘What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?’ In our opinion, betrayal of every previously held theological and political principle is a very dear price to have paid for the title of Northern Ireland First Minister.” PAISLEY "FORCED TO QUIT AS MODERATOR" The Rev Ian Paisley was forced from his position as head of the Free Presbyterian Church, sources have claimed. It is believed that the 81 year old resigned from his post after decades as moderator to avoid the “humiliation” of splitting fundamentalist followers. One insider said: “It became very obvious that if he did stand he would lose and in those circumstances he pleaded with Mr Paisley has made no official comment on the alleged dispute, which centres on the separation of religion and politics. After a five hour meeting by church elders and ministers last night, it was announced that Mr Paisley will not stand for office Following the meeting, deputy moderator of the church the Rev Ron Johnstone said: “At the annual general meeting of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, it was agreed by an overwhelming majority of members that all Presbytery offices "In January 2008 all offices will be vacated. Dr Paisley has indicated that he will not be standing for the office of moderator The Free Presbyterian Church began on March 17, 1951, after a conflict between some members of the Presbyterian congregation in Crossgar, County Down and the Presbyterian hierarchy. The church describes itself as fundamentalist, From four churches in 1951, the denomination has grown to about 60 congregations in Northern Ireland, and a total of about 100 through the world, including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, the United States and Australia. LOS ANGELES RC DIOCESE TO PAY OUT £330 MILLION TO ABUSED CHILDREN The Los Angeles diocese of the Roman Catholic Church has been forced to come up with a settlement figure of between $650 and $660 million (around £330 million) to stave off a series of highly embarrassing lawsuits from over 500 adults in that diocese alone who were sexually abused as children by Roman Catholic priests. The average payout will be about £500,000, with the top payout said to be worth £1.75 million. The proposed deal was due to be accepted by a judge as we went to press. If the settlement terms are agreed, the court will release many details of the horrific and sexual acts of abuse perpetrated by the Papacy’s priests. There may yet be further prosecutions. The deal is expected to include the release of sufficient information to enable campaigners to discover whether more senior church officials covered up known abuse. The settlement would be the biggest compensation payment the RC Church has made so far since the sexual abuse scandal erupted five years ago, and would take the total paid out by US RC dioceses to well over £1 billion. The Los Angeles diocese is expected to have to sell some 50 or so properties to meet the compensation figure. Ray Boucher, lead plaintiff lawyer in the case, said: “The settlement calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files. Transparency is a critical part of this and it will be part of a healing process for the abused”. David Clohessy, National Director of the Survivors Network [of those abused by priests], said that while it was the largest settlement by the Church, money was not the key objective for victims: “It is never about the money. Victims want healing, prevention, closing, accountability”. In February 2004, a report commissioned by the Church said over 4,000 Roman Catholic priests in the US had faced sexual abuse allegations in the past 50 years. Five years later, the Dallas diocese was forced to pay out over £15 million in compensation claims. In the past year alone, the following payouts have been made by the Papacy for child abuse: Sacramento Diocese - £18 million; Oakland Diocese - £28 million; Archdiocese of Los Angeles - £30 million, and Spokane Diocese (Washington) - £25 million. In February this year, the San Diego diocese became the largest in the country to seek bankruptcy protection rather than go to trial on the civil lawsuits. San Diego attorney Irwin Zalkin, who represents victims of priest abuse in that diocese, said: "I think this Los Angeles settlement is a testament to the significance and the seriousness of this problem within the Catholic Church. I hope San Diego will follow their lead. Bishop Brom seems to want to devalue the harm that was done to people in San Diego. But there is no way we will allow people injured in San Diego to be compensated at half of what other POPE "DID NOT HELP GIRLS ABUSED BY FLORENCE PRIEST" The “How much suffering there is in the world!” Pope Benedict XVI lamented in his Easter sermon, naming Darfur, Iraq, Somalia, the Congo, Lebanon and other trouble spots around the globe. But there was no space in his list for the abused women of the parish of Regina della Pace (“Queen of Peace”) on the outskirts of Florence. For more than three years, these women have been trying to persuade the Church to take vigorous action against a Parish priest whom they say persuaded them to have sex with him when they were minors, and continued to do so regularly for years. Confronted by their testimony, the church authorities first transferred the priest to another parish, and then out of the diocese. But he remains a priest, andhas received only token punishment. In the United States, failure to take firm action against abusive priests left the Church in Boston with a legacy of bitter mistrust and legal bills totalling more than $150m (76m). In Italy, however, it would appear that the lessons have not been learnt. Fr Lelio Cantini, now in his eighties, became the parish priest of Regina della Pace in the mid Seventies. A self styled "charismatic”, lie was accompanied by a clairvoyant woman who had visions of Jesus and drew up lists of those parishioners whom she said were the “elect of God”. Don Lelio ruled the parish with an iron hand, banishing dissidents from Mass and forbidding them absolution. But, in private, he showed a different side: in the church’s presbytery he induced girls as young as 10 to have sex with him, explaining that this was a way of attaining “total unity with God”. A woman of 45, married with two children, said she had suppressed all memory of the abuse the priest inflicted on her until a couple of years ago. It started, she explained, when she was aged 10. “The Prior [as Cantini insisted on being called] would call me into his office or his bedroom, get me to undress and explain that, by doing what he asked, I would realise the most complete eucharistic communion,” she said. “He told me to think of the Madonna, who bore Jesus when she was only 12. He said I was the Beloved of the Song of Songs and that what happened between us was the same as what happened in the Garden of Eden.” She said the relationship continued for 15 years, and that remembering it even now caused her vomiting attacks. “I was absolutely incapable,” she said, “of making a free and aware choice.” Another woman, identified by the initials DA, now in her forties, said her sexual liaison with Fr Cantini “began when I was 17 and continued until I got married. He said I was in need of affection and that he would give it to me. Then he embraced me in the name of Jesus.” The victims kept their memories to themselves until chance reunions prompted them to share their stories and take them to the curia of Florence, the governing body of the church in the city, in January 2004. They made written and oral submissions to the Archbishop of Florence and others with the sole result that, in September 2005, Fr Cantini was transferred to another parish “for reasons of health”. Disgusted by the failure to take their complaints seriously, the victims wrote to Pope Benedict in March 2006 demanding more serious action. In response, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, then head of the Italian Bishops' Conference, informed them that Fr Cantini had left the diocese. Further pressure led to disciplinary measures: Fr Cantini was banned from hearing confession or celebrating Mass for five years, “and every day for one year he must recite Psalm 51” the one that begins, “Have mercy upon me, O God......Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.” The victims say they regard the disciplinary measures “with astonishment and pain”. La Repubblica newspaper reports that Fr Cantini is living in a town on the Tuscan coast, still accompanied by his mysterious “clairvoyant” and with a troop of followers. Those who say he made their lives a misery say they will bring him to justice Bruce Anderson PRIEST CONVICTED OF TORTURE AND MURDER IN ARGENTINA An Argentine Protestant leader has welcomed the conviction of a former Roman Catholic police chaplain for direct involvement in killing, torture and kidnapping during the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. "As far as human rights are concerned, clergy cannot place themselves above other citizens. Human rights and constitutional guarantees must always be respected,” said the Rev. Juan Schvindt, executive secretary of the Evangelical Church of the River Plate. Schvindt was reacting to the 9 October conviction of Catholic priest Christian von Wernich, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in seven homicides, 31 cases of torture, and 42 of cases of illegitimate deprivation of liberty. The military regime that ruled Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s has been held responsible for the deaths and disappearances of between 11,000 and 30,000 people, the Reuters news agency reported. Von Wernich became chaplain of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police in 1976. He claimed during his trial that he had been carrying out pastoral duties in the detention and torture centres that the police set up during the period of military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. He was a personal confessor of General Ramon Camps, then chief of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police, who has been held responsible for hundreds of disappearances and the setting up of numerous secret Following the collapse of the dictatorship, von Wernich went to work in a parish about 250 kilometres from Buenos Aires, and was later transferred to Bragado, in the heart of the Argentina pampas. In 1996 he moved to Chile, where he worked as a priest under a false name. He was exposed seven years later by a journalist. The Roman Catholic bishop’s conference of Argentina said it was "shocked" by the involvement of a priest in such crimes. [ENI] PRIEST "HAD AFFAIR" WITH MURDERED GIRL A PRIEST claimed to have had a sexual relationship with a Polish student whose body was later found under the floor of his church, a court heard. Fr Gerry Nugent, of Glasgow’s St Patrick's Church, told a Sunday newspaper he had a relationship with Angelika Kluk (23), the court heard. But the student’s sister, Aneta Kluk, branded the suggestion “outrageous and untrue” as she gave evidence at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court had earlier heard that the priest turned “cold” towards Ms Kluk after learning she was having an affair with an older married man. Her sister told the court Fr Nugent was an alcoholic with a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ personality when he drank. Ms Kluk was giving evidence at the trial of Peter Tobin (60) who is accused of raping and murdering Angelika Kluk. Mr Tobin is accused of killing the student last year and hiding her body under the floor of St Patrick’s Church in the Anderston area of Glasgow. He denies all the charges against him. During cross questioning of Aneta Kluk, Donald Findlay QC, defending, told the court The Scottish Mail on Sunday published an article in February this year with the headline: "Churchman admits sex with tragic Angelika" Mr Findlay said the article continued: “A priest has sensationally confessed to having a sexual relationship with a murdered Polish student whose body was buried under his church.” "Father Gerry Nugent, 66, admitted a lengthy and intimate relationship with Angelika.” But secretary Aneta Kluk, (28) told the court: “His claim was outrageous and untrue.” Mr Findlay put it to the witness: “Should I understand your position to be that you believe in your own mind that Father Nugent is a liar when he said he had a sexual relationship with Angelika?” "Yes,” she replied. Ms Kluk also told the court she noticed the priest’s personality would change when he drank. Asked how she would describe him, she said: “Jekyll and Hyde.” Jurors were also told that the priest did not “lift a finger” to help find the student after she disappeared. They were told he became “cold” towards Miss Kluk when he found out about the nature of her relationship with a married man named Martin MacAskill. Mr MacAskill also entered the witness box. He struggled to maintain his composure as he confessed to the affair. “It was a romantic and sexual relationship,” he told the court. “I loved her - still do.” The case continues. LUTHERAN CALLS FOR RELIGIOUS EQUALITY IN R.C. LITHUANIA A Lithuanian Lutheran Bishop has said the country’s smaller religious groups, including the Lutheran church, need to have the same rights in their dealings with the State as does the majority Roman Catholic Church. The current relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the State in Lithuania is regulated by three agreements the country signed with the Holy See in 2000. "Unfortunately, the attitude of the state institutions towards the traditional religious minorities does not encourage optimism, because each time we are reminded of the exclusivity of the Roman Catholic Church”, said Sabutis, who heads the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lithuania. (ENI) CHURCH OF IRELAND BISHOP'S WIFE CONVERTS TO ROMANISM
The event was covered in the secular press south of the border and on Radio Ulster’s Talkback programme, where the interviewer posed the question, in view of what had happened, “What kind of preacher is this who loses such a sheep as his own wife from the flock?” JEWS ASKED TO DELETE "OFFENSIVE TEXT" From The Catholic Herald 12/10/2007 By Igor Toronyi One of America’s most senior Catholic prelates, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, has asked Jews to drop passages In an interview with The National Catholic Reporter the cardinal said that Jews should remove statements in the Talmud that Catholics would consider offensive. He suggested that the sections of the Talmud that appears to claim that Jesus was illegitimate could be removed in some kind of “exchange deal” with similarly offensive parts of the traditional Mass. The claim that the Talmud says anything about the illegitimacy of Jesus, however, is hotly contested. It rests on two controversial interpretations. According to some experts, “Plony”, the man referred to as the “bastard”, is actually a reference to the character Eshoo Ben Pandora, who some Jews believe to be Jesus Christ, owing to some similarity in both their biographies. Many academics, however, reject this interpretation, saying there is no evidence to support it. Either way, Cardinal George's comments are unlikely to go down well with Jews, according to Sister Clare Jardine, who works for the British Committee of Catholic/Jewish relations. She said that it was wrong to equate the Talmud with the traditional missal. "There’s no equivalence between the two because the Talmud would not be used for prayers,” she said. The Cardinal believed that the alteration to the Talmud could be done in exchange for a shift in the tone of the text of the The reference to Jewish “perfidiousness” was removed in 1960 by Pope John XXIII but the prayer for their conversion remains. The 1965 revised prayer reads: “Let us also pray that our God and Lord will look kindly on the Jews, so that they "We should be very cautious about any prayer that [Jews] find insulting,” the Cardinal said. But he added that this should work in both directions.
