STRANGE PARTNERS?

ACT OF FAITH...Pope John Paul II greets President Mohammad Khatami for a meeting

signalling better relations between the two great religions of Christianity and Islam.

VATICAN VISIT BY MOSLEM LEADER

The Vatican was cloaked in a veil of security recently while the Pope met Iran's President for private talks that could lay the foundation for better relations between Christianity and Islam.

After the 25 minute meeting in his private library, Pope John Paul called it "an important, promising day."

As President Khatemi left the library, he said: "The hope is for the final victory of monotheism, morality, peace and reconciliation." The Iranian leader asked the Pope to pray for him.

In a public exchange of gifts after their meeting with interpreters, the two men appeared relaxed and pleased.

The Pope gave the President a painting of Saints Peter and Paul; President Khatami presented Pope John Paul with a Persian rug with a design of St Mark's basilica in Venice.

On the eve of the audience, President Khatami, in a speech near Florence emphasised the common ground among the world's religions, declaring there were no "quintessential differences" among faiths. He said the Vatican meeting was "great and pleasant."

As the two men emerged from the library, the chanting of dissidents outside in St Peter's Square could be heard. The audience began with the Pope saying "Welcome" in English.

Security appeared to be even heavier than during visits to the Vatican by US presidents. Helicopters buzzed overhead, hundreds of police blocked off the boulevard leading to St Peter's Square and searched rubbish bins for any explosives. St Peter's Square was off-limits to tourists, but somehow about 50 chanting protesters opposed to the visit broke through. They were quickly surrounded by as many police officers.

Mother Teresa: Pope lifts customary five year rule

EARLY MOVE TO MAKE MOTHER TERESA A SAINT

The Pope has waived the mandatory wait of five years after death to begin the process of declaring Mother Teresa a Saint, the Archbishop of Calcutta said recently.

Archbishop Henry D'Sonza said he had received a letter from the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of the Saints on December 12, announcing the waiver, but had not publicised it.

In Rome, the Vatican confirmed the dispensation from the Pope, who at one point had indicated that the five year rule would hold, even for Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to the destitute of Calcutta.

"The demand was so great and insistent that the Holy Father thought to go ahead with the dispensation," said the Rev Ciro Benedettini, a Vatican spokesman.

Now Calcutta's archbishop can begin the process of gathering information and testimony at the diocesan level about Mother Teresa, the first step toward possible beatification and sainthood.

The letter from the Vatican read: "The Supreme Pontiff has hereby granted the dispensation from the norm so that a petition to start the cause of beatification and canonisation of the servant of God, Teresa, the foundress of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters and Brothers of Charity, could be initiated before the five-year period of her death"

This is the first time in recent memory that such an exception has been made the archbishop said. - AP

MORE ECUMENICAL LOVE AND TOLERANCE!!

Mr. and Mrs. Dowson and family outside their church.

ECUMENISTS ATTACK PREACHER'S WIFE WITH EIGHT FOOT CROSS ON GOOD FRIDAY

Mr James Dowson described to the English Churchman how he and his wife were attacked when an ecumenical procession on Good Friday was proceeding from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Chapel to the Church of the Holy Name, Seafar, Glasgow (Scottish Episcopalian) past the front of his own church, the Reformed Evangelical Mission in Fleming road, Cumbernauld. Mr Dowson accompanied by his wife and another woman and six children aged 2-10 years were standing in front of his church. Bible in hand, he protested against ecumenism. Some of the 50 marchers - Roman Catholic and Episcopalian - turned on the protesters. A marcher is said to have seized Mr Dowson by the throat. His wife rushed to his assistance and was sent flying with the cross. Both Mr and Mrs Dowson were now on the floor with their three children screaming. An onlooker told the Sunday Mail "The cross was really big and heavy like two railway sleepers nailed together. When she went down a lot of the marchers walked off in disgust".

Mr Dowson has written a circular letter to the local churches asking for their support. He says, "I am strongly against ecumenism but I would never, never resort to violence ..." more disturbing for us was when we contacted Father Pat Osborn of the Sacred Heart Chapel ... he rasped at us, 'quote' - 'You all deserved it' ".

NUN CONVICTED OF RAPING GIRL AGED 10

by

Michael Devine in Dublin

An order of nuns today said they were devasted by the crime of a former member of their community, convicted of raping a young girl in her care.

Nora Watt (51) formerly Sister Dominic of the Sisters of Mercy, will be sentenced next month.

She was convicted by a 10-2 majority verdict by a jury of eight men and four women after five hours of deliberation. Her, co-accused, Paul McCabe (50) a homeless man who had a room at the care centre in Cappoquin, Co Waterford, where Watt was in charge, was also found guilty of raping the girl. Both were remanded on bail pending sentencing.

The offences took place between January 1987 and December 1988 when the girl was 10 years old. The victim, who broke down in tears as the verdict was announced, claimed that the nun held her by the ankles and looked on as the man raped her. She also told the court that the ex-nun used to get into her bed, caress her private parts, and kiss her.

Another resident of the care centre, a woman who is now 26 years old, said she witnessed the rape. Watt said in evidence that she never had any sexual contact with any of the children in the home.

After the verdict, the Sisters of Mercy issued a statement of apology to the victim and urged anyone else who had been abused while in the Order's care to come forward.

METHODIST FOUNDER - JOHN WESLEY

SPEAKS OUT ON POPERY

"There is no city under the sun which has so clear a title to Catholic blood guiltiness as Rome. The guilt of the blood shed under the heathen emperors has not been removed under the popes, but hugely multiplied. Nor is Rome accountable only for that which has been shed in the city but for that shed in all the earth. For at Rome under the pope, as well as under heathen emperors, were the blood orders and edicts given, and where ever the blood of holy men was shed, there were the grand rejoicing for it. And what immense quantities of blood has been shed by her agents. Charles IX of France in his letter to Gregory XIII boasts that in and not long after the massacres of Paris, he had destroyed seventy thousand Huguenots. Some have computed that from the year 1518 to 1548, fifteen millions of Protestants have perished by war and inquisition! This may be overcharged, but certainly the number of them in those thirty years, as well as since, is almost incredible. To these we may add innumerable martyrs in ancient, middle, and late ages, in Bohemia, Germany, Holland, France, England, Ireland, and many other parts of Europe, Africa and Asia." - Notes on the New Testament.

REFORMS FOR SWISS GUARD AFTER KILLINGS

The Swiss Guard, the corps which protects the Pope, is to be reformed a year after the murder of the former commander and his wife.

Recruitment and promotion would be better regulated, its commander, Col. Pius Segmuller, said recently.

Col. Segmuller succeeded Col. Alois Estermann, killed with his wife, allegedly by a guardsman who then committed suicide.

He said morale was high "concerning the future", but the episode had left "scars which are still open."

TRIMBLE MEETS THE POPE

As First Minister Designate of Northern Ireland and leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, David Trimble is one of the most high profile members of the Orange Institution. When he joined it he took a solemn oath that he should,"by all lawful means, resist the ascendancy of that Church, its encroachments, and the extension of its power."

We leave it to our readers and his fellow Orangemen to decide if by trusting the Roman Pontiff in the Vatican, he has in fact violated his oath and obligation.
