SIX SHORT RULES FOR CHRISTIANS

Never neglect daily private prayer; and when you pray, remember that God is present and that He hears your prayers. (HEBREWS 11: 6)

Never neglect daily private Bible-reading, and when you read remember that God is speaking to you, and that you are to believe and act on what He says. I believe all backsliding begins with the neglect of these two rules. (JOHN 5: 39)

Never let a day pass without trying to do something for Jesus. Every night reflect on what Jesus has done for you, and then ask yourself, What am I doing for Him? (MATTHEW 5: 13-16)

If ever you are in doubt as to a thing being right or wrong, go to your room and kneel down and ask God's blessing upon it. (COLOSSIANS 3: 17) If you cannot do this, it is wrong. (ROMANS 14: 22,23)

Never take your Christianity from Christians or argue that because such and such people do so and so, that therefore you may (II CORINTHIANS 10: 12) You are to ask yourself this question, How would Christ act in my place? and strive to follow Him. (JOHN 10: 27)

Never believe what you feel, if it contradicts God's Word. Ask yourself, Can what I feel be true, if God's Word is true? and if BOTH cannot be true, believe God, and rnake your own heart the liar. (ROMANS 3: 4; I JOHN 5: 10-1l)

Brainwashing

One of the techniques of brainwashing is to cause immense suffering so that life is intolerable. At the appropriate moment the policies that cause the suffering are reversed. The relief that results often causes the sufferers to overflow with gratitude and affection for the one who provides the relief, while his role in causing the suffering is forgotten.

THE MYSTERY OF CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLES

David Davidson wrote in his book, Miracles of History, that a "pyramidion is the apex stone of a pyramid at the top of a column". Is it the Headstone and Chief Cornerstone rejected by the builders and symbolized, as he suggests, by two obelisks called "Cleopatra's Needles"? One of these needles stands on the Thames Embankment [London] and the other in Central Park [New York].

An obelisk is a tapering shaft of stone, usually monolithic and square or rectangular in section with a pyramidal apex, a type of monument specifically characteristic of ancient Egypt. Such obelisks were probably more than mere embellishments of the temples. The city of On was the centre of sun worshippers. The pyramidions were sheathed in bright metal catching and reflecting the sun's rays as if they were thrones of sunlight. They were dedicated to solar deities.

The origin of the obelisk may be sought in sacred upright stones set up in honour of gods and dead. The Israelites set up pillars of stone to their Elohim in their wanderings. Stone pillars were used by other people in various ways corrupt from the original use. The Egyptians set up obelisks usually in pairs and placed one on each side of the entrance to a temple or shrine. Cleopatra's Needles were typical examples of these obelisks.

They were fashioned of rock at Syene quarries near what is Aswan today, about seven hundred miles up the Nile beyond Cairo, on the frontier of Nubia, and by order of the great Pharaoh Thotmes III (circa 1501-1447 B.C.).

The Needles were originally transported by water from the quarries at Syene at Heliopolis, now a prosperous suburb of Cairo, and erected before the great Temple of the Sun. They are nearly 70 feet in height, weighing approximately 200 tons. They are carved of rose red blocks of Syenite granite, and are engraved with hieroglyphics cut deep into the rock and carefully polished. On both Needles the inscription on the middle column is in honour of Thotmes III, telling of his achievements. He was the Alexander the Great of his day.

Heliopolis will be known to readers of the Bible as the City of On, the ancient capital of Egypt, and was known to the Egyptians as Memphis, to the Greeks as Heliopolis, city of the sun, and to Jews as Beth Shemish (Sun), the house of Shem. On was the city where Joseph took his wife. It is possible that Jacob gazed on these two impressive monuments. Moses and Aaron would surely have done so, for On was the place where Moses grew up.

We know that Pythagoras and Plato saw the collection of the monuments before the Temple of the Sun which caused Heliopolis to become known as the City of Obelisks.

The inscriptions on these two monoliths showing that Thotmes III erected them, gives the period of their origin accurately. As his reign began when Joseph was thirty years old (A.M. 2289), they must have been set up at the approximate time Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh were born. The obelisks were standing in Memphis when the aged Jacob (Israel) gave God's blessing and birthright promises to Joseph's sons and their seed after them.

The granite from which the huge 70-ton blocks, forming the King's Chamber in the Great Pyramid of Gizeh were hewn came from the Syene quarries 450 years earlier.

The Romans, in the arrogant way of conquerors, built the Caesarium, or Palace of the Caesars, in Alexandria, Egypt. This palace stood by the side of the harbour and was surrounded by a sacred grove, ornamented with porticos and fitted with libraries, paintings and statues. it was the loftiest building in the city. To enhance its splendor, the obelisks we know as Cleopatra's Needles were brought from Heliopolis where they had stood for fourteen centuries like sentinels guarding the palace.

This is why the obelisks have become linked by association with the name of Cleopatra VII, the last queen of Egypt, although they were actually of great antiquity even before that gracious lady was born. Alexandria was her royal city, and they were erected there in 12 B.C.

One of Cleopatra's Needles was presented to the British Government by Mahomet Ali in 1819, but did not reach London until 1878 when it was erected on the Victoria Embankment of the Thames River. Sir Benjamin Baker designed the cylindrical grey granite pedestal on which it stands.

Its sister needle was presented to the City of New York by Ismael Pasha, Khedive of Egypt in 1877, and was brought to New York City at the expense of W H. Vanderbilt in 1880 and set up in Central Park in 1881 on a knoll southwest of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The United States wanted to obtain some ancient monuments and their wishes came true, for the Needle is one of the oldest monuments in the country.

The Thames River Needle was treasured for its antiquity as well as a memorial to the British victory in the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. Authorities regarded it as a monument to Bible days when they buried beneath it, among other articles, a copy of John 3:16, printed by the Foreign Bible Society in 215 languages. The American Bible Society did the same for the obelisk in New York.

Why these two ancient monuments should ever have left Egypt nobody really knows, or why one should have been given to Britain and the other to the United States, where the modern offspring of Ephraim and Manasseh now live, is equally a mystery. But can we not see God's guiding hand in all this?

Incidentally, the Washington Monument in the District of Columbia is also a huge monolith or obelisk, 555 feet high, the tallest structure in Washington and the largest obelisk in the world. Accordingly, the Washington Monument contains many Scriptural inscriptions including John 3:16 inside. Furthermore, the pyramidal capstone on the Washington Monument is inscribed: "Glory to God".

AMERICA'S SCOTCH-IRISH PRESIDENTS

As Americans celebrate 4th July and Ulster Protestants celebrate12th July we remember once again that the links between these two parts of the "Anglo-Saxon/Israel" world are strong and binding. This is well illustrated by the Scotch/Irish Presidents of U.S.A.

An accurate estimate of the number of Presidents of Scotch-Irish origin is difficult to arrive at because such figures depend on the degree of blood relationship on which claim is made. The Ulster-Scot Historical Society in their search for ancestral home- steads accepted only those of direct Scotch-Irish descent. Even accepting this limited definition the number amounts to ten - a fairly sizeable proportion.

The names and the years of their Presidency are as follows:

Andrew Jackson, 1828-37.

James Knox Polk, 1845-49.

James Buchanan, 1857-61.

Andrew Johnson, 1865-69.

Ulysses Simpson Grant, 1869-77.

Chester Alan Arthur, 1881-85.

Grover Cleveland, 1885-89 and 1893-97.

Benjamin Harrison, 1889-93.

William McKinley, 1897-1901.

James Woodrow Wilson, 1913-2 1.

In the ninety-two years from the start of Andrew Jackson's Presidency to the end of Woodrow Wilson's the White House was occupied for fifty-six of those years by men of Scotch-Irish descent. In addition, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, James Munroe, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Trueman and Dwight Eisenhower were all proud of the fact that on their maternal side they too, had Ulster blood in their veins.

ISRAEL - LOST AND FOUND

The ten-tribed kingdom of Israel was taken away into Assyrian captivity about 721 B.C. They moved from the land of their captors north and west, eventually going into southern Europe. Sharon Turner, the great Anglo-Saxon historian, tells us, 'The migrating Scythians crossed the Araxes, passed out of Asia, and suddenly appeared in Europe in the sixth century B.C.' II Esdras informs us that the ten tribes left their exile, moved across the Euphrates to a place called Arsareth (city or hill of Sareth). To the north-west of the Black Sea is a River Sareth to this day. The burial place of these people has furnished ample inscriptions to show clearly that the ten tribes of Israel were resident in the Crimea for centuries. They moved westward across Europe, under different names but all one people. These were the early ancestors of the Anglo-Saxon-Ceitic peoples." (Documentary Studies, Vol. 1, p. 150)

The above photograph is a Hebrew-Phoenician inscription found on a tombstone in an Israelitish cemetery in the Crimea of the year 15 B.C., reading:

"this is the tombstone of Buki, the son of Itchak the priest; may his rest be in Eden, at the time of the salvation of Israel. In the year 702 of the years of our exile."

BISHOP DIRECTS DOUBTERS TO JUDAISM

An Anglican bishop has suggested that people who believe in God but cannot come to terms with all the claims of Christianity should consider Judaism as an alternative faith. Writing in a Jewish magazine, the Right Rev. Richard Harris, Bishop of Oxford, said, 'I would far rather people come to belief in the living God through Judaism than have no spiritual home at all'.

The bishop believes that Judaism is ideal for monotheists who cannot bring themselves to believe in aspects of Christianity 'Judaism', he said, 'offers a tradition, a way of believing and behaving that had been tried and tested for nearly 4000 years'. However, the bishop said that he personally believed in the claims of the church so had not himself been tempted to convert.
