THERE SHALL BE EARTHQUAKES IN DIVERS PLACES

"There shall be earthquakes in divers places" - Matthew 24:7

EARTHQUAKES ARE COMING JUST LIKE JESUS SAID

(Matthew 24:7 — Luke 21:11)

YES, I know you have heard of some of the recent earthquakes. But you may not be fully aware of the extent of current worldwide seismic activity in recent days.

Here is a listing of major earthquakes in 2003. (The list may not be complete!) I have included several 5.8 or 5.9 quakes as these are classified as almost major.

OVER 60 MAJOR EARTHQUAKES IN 2003

Measurements are mostly from the US Geological Service scale. There may be some discrepancies in the given quake magnitude, as a few may be on the Richter scale, and not USGS.

PREDICTED QUAKE COULD BE MAGNITUDE 9 ON RICHTER SCALE

August 13, 2003. Researchers at Columbia University say the West Coast of the US could soon be facing its worst earthquake in centuries.

New research focusing on the coastal waters off Vancouver show that the area where the Juan de Fuca and North America plates overlap is almost twice the size that they thought.

Columbia’s Earthquake Institute says the original estimate for the zone where the tectonic plates interlock, called Northern Cascadia, was 56 kilometres. The area is now believed to be 90 kllometres.

The known width of the zone now extends farther towards the mainland, creating an additional hazard for coastal communities. The greater the overlap, the more friction is built up, resulting in a more powerful earthquake.

Researchers say that this locked zone could create so much energy when It finally releases, that it could cause one of the largest earthquakes in history. In fact, they say it would release 1,000 times the energy of the 2001 Seattle earthquake, which shattered windows, caused skyscrapers to sway and rattled buildings up to 350 kilometres away. The damage caused by that quake cost several billion dollars.

The Seattle quake registered only a 6.8 on the Richter Scale. Researchers say the predicted Cascadia earthquake would measure at least 9 on the Richter Scale.

FAULTLINE UNDER L.A. COULD CAUSE HUGE EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake fault, discovered in 1999, directly beneath downtown Los Angeles, could devastate the city with a 7.5 tremor - 15 times as strong as the big quake in 1994. (The 6.7 quake in 1994 killed 57 people, and caused $40 billion of damage.)

According to a study by the US Geological Survey, published in the Science magazine, the “Puente Hills fault” has a habit of triggering earthquakes measuring about 7.5 on the Richter scale, which are well able to topple skyscrapers designed to withstand magnitudes of only 5.

The USGS says that the Los Angeles basin has been hit by such an earthquake only four times in the last 11,000 years. The study shows that the Puente Hills fault does not release its energy in small, frequent bursts, but saves it up for massive tremors every 2,000 to 3,000 years.

“AN EARTHQUAKE IN ISRAEL IS A CERTAINTY”

THE Director of the Geological Institute of Israel, Amos Bein, says “the Haifa Bay area is a ticking bomb, which will explode if and when an earthquake occurs.” An earlier GII study said that a 7.0 Richter scale earthquake at Beit Shean would bring down buildings in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Amos Bein, speaking at a discussion on Israel’s preparedness for an earthquake held at the National Infrastructure Ministry, said the most dangerous place in Israel during an earthquake is the Carmel and Haifa Bay region, and the greatest danger of a tremor is the collapse of infrastructure.

“It won’t be the earthquake that will kill, but the collapsing infrastructure,” he warned, referring to Haifa Bay’s gas lines and reservoirs, plants, and concentrations of toxic substances.

Experts say Israel is heading for a major earthquake. It could be in five minutes or 50 years. Tension is building up along the African-Arabian fault line.

The boundary between two tectonic plates runs the length of the country along the Jordan Valley.

A major earthquake took place in Jerusalem during the time of King Uzziah (BC791-740). It is mentioned in the Bible - Zechariah 14:5.

In 1847, the coastal plane of Israel was hit by a strong quake.

Some 75 earthquakes are now occurring in Israel every year but most of them are barely felt Yediot Abaronot reported.

EARTHQUAKE CRACKS KNESSET

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff

February 11, 2004

Jerusalem (jnewswire.com) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked Israel and surrounding states Wednesday morning, sending frightened people streaming into streets throughout the country, but causing only one indirect injury and little damage.

Israel Radio reported the quake left a crack in the ceiling of the Knesset plenum, Israel’s parliament, just minutes before lawmakers were scheduled to take their seats for the day’s debates.

Channel 2 TV reported that Israeli geologists believe a major earthquake could strike Israel without notice, and based on research predict the arrival of “the big one” in the next 50 years.

And Channel I, screening a map highlighting areas of the capital believed to be especially susceptible to damage in the event of a major quake, pointed out that the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock - both straddling Israel’s Temple Mount - were most at risk.

THE FINGER OF GOD?

The earthquake struck shortly after 10 in the morning, shaking buildings in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and the Gaza Strip.

According to Israel Radio, staff in the Israeli Knesset thought a large bomb had gone off, and left their meeting rooms to gather in the building’s corridors.

The station reported that an engineering crew discovered a crack in the ceiling of the Knesset plenum, “directly above the table at which cabinet ministers sit.” The quake occurred half an hour before they were scheduled to take their seats.

At the top of the Cabinet’s agenda right now is the question of unilaterally pulling all Jews out of the Gaza Strip and handing it over to the Palestinians.

Centuries ago, the finger of God was seen writing a message of doom on the wall of Chaldean king Belshazzar’s palace, after he desecrated temple objects sacred to the God of Israel.

POISED FOR CATASTROPHE

According to a recently released report exposing the shoddy standard of construction in the country, a quake of 6.0 or over on the Richter scale is expected to flatten an untold number of buildings, leaving tens of thousands of Israelis dead - possibly many more.

A quake that big could have catastrophic results throughout Israel, where the towns and cities almost all encroach on one another.

Active fault lines run throughout the small Jewish state due to the active tectonic structure of the Dead Sea Rift that runs the full length of Israel.

According to the Risk Management Solutions’ (RMS) Israel Earthquake Model, the Jordan Valley Fault in the north of the country “has a high probability of generating a major earthquake.”

The RMS believes that a large earthquake there ”could create damaging ground motions in every major population center, all located within 70 km of the rift.”

“Research suggests,” says the RMS website, “that the Jordan Valley Fault generates magnitude 7 or larger earthquakes every 1000 years. The last major event on this segment occurred in 1033, increasing the current probability of a major earthquake.”

CONTINUOUS QUAKES

Seismologists say there are earthquakes taking place all the time in the Rift Valley, but most of them are too mild to be felt by man. They do, however, indicate the massive level of instability that exists.

Israel has a long documented record of destructive quakes dating back to 31 BC.

On July 11, 1927, a 6.2 magnitude tremour killed more than 300 people and damaged upward of 1,000 buildings in Jericho, Nablus, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Tiberias, Lod and Ramla.

The last major earthquake to affect Israel was on November 22, 1995 and had its center deep under the Red Sea, about 70km south of Eilat and caused only very minor structural damage.

It is estimated the worst-case scenario of the next major quake would cause Israel over $30 billion in economic damages and an unknown number of casualties.

The Hebrew prophet Zechariah foretells a final, cataclysmic earthquake when the Messiah comes to Jerusalem, an event that will split the Mount of Olives in two, from east to west, creating an enormous valley.

The Book of Revelation speaks of a coming earthquake such as “had not occurred since men were on the earth.”

WORTH THINKING ABOUT

“How can I be loyal to Him and, be silent in circumstances like these? Can a wife be loyal to her husband if she allows without protest his honour to be dragged in the mire? I cannot be loyal without protesting, to the last drop of my blood if I must, against those who are the enemies of the truth of Christ.” - T.T. Shields

THE IDEAL AMBASSADOR

He held the lamp each living day

So low that none could miss the way,

And yet so high to bring in sight

The picture fair of Christ, the Light,

That gazing up, the lamp between,

The hand that held it was not seen.

He held the pitcher, stooping low,

To lips of little ones below,

Then raised it to the weary saint,

And bade him drink, when sick and faint.

They drank; the pitcher then between,

The hand that held it was not seen.

He blew the trumpet, soft and clear,

That trembling sinners need not fear,

And then with louder note and bold,

To storm the walls of Satan’s hold;

The trumpet coming thus between,

The hand that held It was not seen.

And when our Captain says, “Well done,

Thou good and faithful servant, come,

Lay down the pitcher and the lamp;

Lay down the trumpet; leave the camp!”

Thy weary hands will then be seen

Clasped in His pierced ones; naught between.

"The Passion of Christ"

"The Real Passion of Christ"

"Three Prophetic Foundations"

"Jeremiah: From Jerusalem to The Emerald Isle" - (1-9)

In the above messages recently added to and available from our Open-Bible Ministries Online Resource Centre, Pastor Alan casts the searchlight of Scripture upon matters of vital importance for us today. You should listen to "The Passion of Christ" in which Pastor Alan considers the Mel Gibson film which is currently taking the evangelical world by storm and "The Real Passion of Christ" in which he compares and contrasts what the Scriptures actually teach about this subject - and you can now listen to the completed series entitled "Jeremiah: From Jerusalem to The Emerald Isle" in which Pastor Alan shows that after the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon, the Prophet Jeremiah escaped from Palestine with his scribe Baruch and the royal princesses, daughters of Zedekiah. The Prophet and his companions made their way ultimately to Ireland where he re-established the Throne of David, in fulfilment of his commission to "build and plant" and at the same time, in so doing, also re-united the Pharez and Zarah sections of the Tribe of Judah. We believe you will be both blessed and encouraged by listening to these and the other topics available.
