Luke 24:1-12 From the Yorkshire Post, England, August 25, 2000 Egyptian theory on ancient Humber boats. Ancient Egyptians swapped the Nile for the Humber in one of the earliest trade missions to our shores, according to a new book. Egyptologist Lorraine Evans claims in Kingdom of the Ark that evidence from the discovery of three boats on the shores of the Humber shows Egyptians were shipwrecked near Hull about 3,500 years ago. She speculates they had forsaken the ancient wonders of Egypt for a trade journey to Britain, but had come to grief in a storm within swimming distance of the shore, sparking the intriguing possibility they may have made their way to land and could have settled in the area, leaving some inhabitants of the East Riding with Ancient Egyptian roots. Her theory, also drawing on finds from other parts of the country, suggests Ancient Egyptian culture could have had a significant impact on early British life, claiming a princess who was Tutankhamun's half-sister set up a colony in Ireland. Ms. Evans says her findings could prompt a revolution in traditional views about the British and their origins, although her views have been met by scepticism from scholars in the field who believe her claims are based on scanty evidence and that the Egyptians had neither the technology nor the desire to travel to Britain. Three wooden boats were discovered by archaeologists in mud on the banks of the Humber at North Ferriby in 1907 and were at first mistaken for Viking longships, but it was not until they were radiocarbon dated that it was firmly established they were Bronze Age craft dating from 700-400 BC. Fragments from the boats - regarded as some of the most significant discoveries of their kind ever in Europe are now on display at the Hull and East Riding Museum and at the Maritime Museum outside Hull, and show some of the earliest examples of seagoing vessels capable of international travel. In her book, Ms Evans claims the North Ferriby boats were of the same design to those which once travelled up and down the Nile, matching one found near the Great Pyramid - dubbed the First Wonder of the World by the Greeks - but until now the link had never been examined by an Egyptologist. She said: "The boats are around 16 metres long and match precisely the design of a contemporary Egyptian seagoing vessel discovered intact near the pyramids of Giza." "The importance of such findings cannot be underestimated. Every aspect of our rich cultural heritage would now have to be altered to include the peoples of Egypt." "Every traditional text recounting the history of the British Isles would have to be rewritten. The simple fact that many peoples of Britain are going about their daily business unaware of their Egyptian heritage is astounding in itself." 'By grace are ye saved through faith.' - Ephesians 2:8 Over 200 years ago John Newton, a drunken sailor, got off a ship on the docks of London. He was a slave trader and an alcoholic, a street fighter, a man who had morally hit bottom. As he was weaving his way through the streets of London, Newton passed a little Methodist mission hall where he heard singing. He felt compelled in his heart to go in. Inside, the people were singing about the grace of God, and the preacher spoke of God's holy love for everybody. When he gave the invitation to come to Christ, John Newton made his way to the front and surrendered his life to Jesus Christ. Later, as he was contemplating what he had done and was meditating on his new found experience with God, Newton wrote the great hymn "Amazing Grace". " Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that, saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see." God's grace is amazing because it is boundless, it is free, and it is available to every one of us - no matter what we have done. If you feel that your sins have put you beyond the reach of God's grace, they haven't. Wherever you are, whatever you've done, God's grace reaches you. America today is a nation divided, although you surely will not read of the specifics of the lines of division. Al Gore received almost total support from Blacks (93%) and from those areas with high concentrations of Jews - essentially the more urban areas. On the other hand, Bush received most of his support from the more rural, more fundamentalist Christian , more agricultural areas in the heartland of the nation. WILL WE WALK IN VICTORY OR DEFEAT? A sense of terrible hopelessness abounds among the Protestants of Ulster about the future of their British Heritage, their Reformed Faith and the very future of their children. A sense of frustration and bewilderment has infected the minds of tens of thousands of our people. We are told that the minority is now so numerically and demographically strong that we must make an accommodation with them. Our leaders in church and state are already behaving as if we were the defeated minority trying to negotiate the best possible terms. The prisons have been opened to release the vilest Republican terrorists guilty of the most heinous atrocities. Those that hate us have been set in government over us whilst retaining the largest terrorist arsenals in western Europe. Fear grips our people, as it did our co-religionists in Southern Ireland back in 1921. We are told that our only alternatives are FIGHT, FLIGHT or NEGOTIATED SURRENDER. Even within the ranks of Fundamentalist Protestants apathy and despair are in the driving seat. They have given up hope of winning a victory for Faith and Fatherland, for God and Ulster. The best that some can hope for is a "fairy tale" rapture. For sixty years Bible denying Modernism has been spewed forth from the pulpits of our mainline churches, like a flood of filthy water from the serpents mouth. Our church leaders and politicians have been engaged in a sell out for forty years. Liberals, Communists, Humanists and Ecumenists of every stripe in the rainbow have worked to destroy us. For over thirty years we have been terrorised, bombed, boycotted, maimed and murdered. Our national flag and other British symbols are removed and our patriotic marches prohibited. Everything in which we trusted, all our bulwarks have been removed. Our Stormont Parliament, our Security Forces, our Loyal Orders, all that our people trusted in is gone - BUT we are not defeated, our hope is in our God. "Give us help from trouble for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly for it is he that shall tread down our enemies" PSALM 60:11-12 It is now seventy to eighty years since we enjoyed a province wide revival - not since the days of W.P. Nicholson and Principal George Jeffreys have we seen a spiritual awakening on the scale needed to turn our Community and culture back to the standards of God's Word. Modern slushy charismatic "Christianity" has failed to impact society. Sin reigns supreme, Drug dealing, drunkeness and every form of degeneracy reigns in the now "peaceful and pluralist" Ulster and human life is cheap. What passes for revival to-day does not come up to the Biblical standard. Modern "revivals" are short lived and skin deep. They barely touch the lives of the people let alone change our community. God's people are despondent and disillusioned. We must in the midst of this gross darkness hold fast to the vision. Do you think the God who saved your forefathers in 1641, behind the walls of Londonderry in 1688, at the Boyne in 1690 and again from 1912-1922 is going to abandon us now? Not so, He has promised Revival and Restoration to our land "For the vision is for an appointed time but at the end it shall speak and not be, though it tarry, wait for it, because it will surely come it will not tarry." HABAKKUK 2:3 Rise from your knees, bow to nobody but Almighty God. Step forward in faith, read your Bible, pray and start to witness for this Gospel of the Kingdom like never before. Pray as if it all depended on God, but work and witness as if it all depended on you. This is no time to curse the darkness, to live in doom and gloom with others who murmer and complain. The sun still shines beyond the blackest clouds. Ulster belongs to the Seed of Israel by the Covenant Oath of Jehovah. Stand up and be counted on the side of God and right, to the praise and glory of the Lord Jesus let us go forward in the victory message of Christian dominion. Let us occupy until our King returns from Heaven to occupy the Throne of David, scatter His enemies and rule forever and ever in the New Heaven and Earth. Meanwhile you can tip the scales. May Christ's words become a living reality in the lives of our people when He said to us "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto the whole house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven." MATTHEW 5:14-16
Many people visit Jerusalem hoping to see a green hill, outside a city wall, with a garden and the tomb where Jesus was laid. But it must be remembered that the death of Jesus at the time was of importance to only a small band of believers. They looked for his imminent return and had little reason to mark the place of his death. In AD 70 Jerusalem was destroyed, as Jesus foretold, leaving not one stone upon another. Modern pilgrims are surprised to find the Holy Sepulchre Church well inside the city walls. The explanation given is that the city expanded rapidly taking in the site. In 1882, General Gordon became convinced that a hill resembling a skull, just outside the city, was the true site. Archaeologists cannot agree on the date of the tomb found nearby, but it is hewn from rock, has a groove for a rolling stone, and would have met the needs of a man of substance. If pilgrims need to choose, it is open to them. Tradition must weigh most with some, others are happier with more recent discoveries. Yet the quest should never be just for a site, but for a renewal of spiritual experience leading to that certainty, "He is not here. He is risen".
Queen Victoria once attended a service in St. Paul's Cathedral and listened to a sermon that interested her greatly. Afterwards she asked her chaplain, "Can one be absolutely sure in this life of eternal safety?" His answer was that he knew no way that one could be absolutely sure. This incident was published in the Court News and came to the notice of a humble minister of the Gospel, John Townsend. After reading of Queen Victoria's question and the answer she received, he prayed much about the matter and then sent the following note to the Queen.
"To her gracious Majesty our beloved Queen Victoria from one of her most humble subjects: "With trembling hands, but heart filled love, and because I know that we can be absolutely sure now for our eternal life in the Home that Jesus went to prepare, may I ask your Most Gracious Majesty to read the following passages of Scripture: John 3:16; Romans 10:9,10. "I sign myself, your servant for Jesus' sake," John Townsend John Townsend was not alone in praying about his letter to the Queen. He took others into his confidence and much prayer was offered up to God in Her Majesty's behalf. About two weeks later he received a modest looking envelope in which was enclosed the following letter. "To John Townsend:
Yes, Queen Victoria knew that she occupied the Throne of David, and she ascribed Britain's greatness to the Word of God. Yet so exalted a person was not ashamed to make this humble confession of her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She knew Him to be the great Saviour and Healer of men, the Redeemer of Israel, and the Architect of this nation's history, but she confessed Him also as her own personal Saviour. Father let me dedicate All this year to Thee, In whatever earthly state Thou wilt have me be. Not from sorrow, pain, or care Freedom dare I claim; This alone shall be my prayer: Glorify Thy name.
Can a child presume to choose Where or how to live? Can a father's love refuse All the best to give? More Thou givest every day Than the best can claim Nor withholdest aught that may Glorify Thy name.
If in mercy Thou wilt spare Joys that yet are mine; if on life, serene and fair, Brighter rays may shine, Let my glad heart while it sings Thee in all proclaim And, whatever the future brings, Glorify Thy name.
